Franju's 'Judex' is a masterly homage to Louis Feuillade's silent movie of 1916, reproducing the costumes and settings of the original in scrupulous detail. American magician and actor Channing Pollock plays Judex, the mysterious man who writes a note to a banker, Favraux, telling him to pay back the people he has swindled. When Favraux ignores it, Judex kidnaps him but makes it look like he has died. Judex spares Favraux's life when the banker's daughter refuses the inheritance, but when Diana Monti, the former governess, kidnaps the daughter in order to get Favraux's money, Judex is hot on her heels.
