Don't go near this place as they are operating a very clever CON which I spotted and told the manager who said it was normal procedure but cost us an extra £9! On top of an already expensive fish supper! for two.

Basically you order the standard haddock and chips - which many tourists may do as well as first timers to a restaurant which prides itself of its 'fish and chips'. The waitress then says "mushy peas or spinach?" Firstly spinach is a odd choice to accompany fish and chips but they put it in such as way as it is part of the standard dish - to be honest, we know our fish and chips and only went to this place as our fav fish restaurant near Borough Market was closed for refurbishment and also we think nothing in driving to the coast to experience what many think is the best fish and chips in UK and scores highly in reviews, a restaurant on the Kent coast near Lydd. However back to last night’s experience!

I opted for mushy peas, my wife after holding back laughter, the spinach.
The bill came to over £50 and on it was listed an extra £4.30 for spinach and £2.30 for mushy peas on top of the £15.95 for a smallish piece of battered haddock and chips. (the majority of our plate was taken up by a half lemon) with the fish placed in the remaining sector on the chips). Have a look at proper fish and chip restaurants where the battered fish has the top and bottom part hanging over the edge of a plate! Here is was more rectangle shaped and no where need the sides of teh plate in size.

I asked why we were not asked if we wanted a side dish, as then the options would be of course mushy peas, side salad etc (standard fayre with fish and chips, although side salad may have a few perfectionist turning in their batter!)
Along with the side dishes were of course the Spinach and numerous types of potato.

The waitress wording remember on taking our order of two haddocks please was and I quote again 'Mushy peas or spinach?' Not would you like a side dish to go with that.

The manageress laughed at us when we queried this and said; of course things like mushy peas are not included as it says haddock and chips on the menu and clearly states on the opposite page the extras. She was indifferent and I agree with other reviewers, they rely on first timers coming to the area to go to one of the theatres there and not worried if they come again as there are always new customers to replace them.

Next is con number 2
On arrival, three slices of bread were put on the table and some butter. No one asked, just placed there as we sat down. On the next table was a single diner who also sat down and was also given three slices of bread and some butter.

The bill came and we were charged 2 x £1.75 for the use of sharing those three slices of bread between us. Next table was also charged but just £1.75 as he was alone! Again I raised this with the manager and she said the bread is clearly marked on the menus as to be paid for - yes but then if there was three of us, instead of two would we be each charged £1.75 but this time a three way share is one slice each!

Also the bread arrived before the menus, and we had already buttered one slice before we knew it was extra. But £1.75 each come on!
Avoid please at all costs!
